Thank you to the white wall sessions for featuring Mat and Co. once again on their syndicated television program.  On Saturday October 18, the band's song "Holyoke" was aired alongside songs from other talented artists from Sioux Falls, SD and the region.

Our gig at Toddy's Tap was our last Sioux City show save the chance of one per year - more than likely when we release an album from here on out. Our vocalist/songwriter Mat D will be relocating to Sioux Falls SD in 2015 and he is moving our headquarters to Sioux Falls as well. Thanks to all of the local venues that took a chance on us, hired us and helped us get to where we are today. Most of all, thank you to the Sioux City fans that have remained faithful to the group from album to album. We appreciate your support. It's time for us to branch out into larger markets and see what we can do with our music. If the opportunity is right you will see us within the city limits - Mat will still appear solo from time to time after the first of the year. Until then...We wish you well Sioux City.

Mat d and the Profane Saints' performance at the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Fest 2014 will be broadcast on South Dakota Public Radio at 11pm, Saturday September 27 on the "No Cover No Minimum" Radio show!  Thanks to SDPB for including us on the program!  Listen online at http://listen.sdpb.org/programs/no-cover-no-minimum-radio

The group has begun work on a BRAND NEW full length album titled "The Mercy Road" that we hope to release on vinyl very soon!

There are so many friends and fans to thank over the past few weeks since the release of "Holyoke" - First- we'd like to thank Lance at Old Skoolz in Sioux Falls and Brent at Vangarde Arts Sioux City.  What those two men have accomplished that sets them apart from other venues is that they support a listening environment.   The audiences they attract come to listen to shows; not talk through them.  To have been able to have perform at both venues is an honor to us.

Next, I'd like to thank our wives, girlfriends and families for standing by us over the past few years.  It's tough to be gone from your spouses and children during sessions, rehearsals and gigs.  We thank them so very much for standing by us over the last three and a half years while we were trying to figure this record out!  We love you.

Last - we thank all of our fans for making Holyoke our BEST SELLING album in only three weeks time since it's release.  We have never moved more units in such a short period of time.  Thank you for supporting us and buying a shirt, CD or downloading a song.  Our success is because of good folks like you.

Blessings and peace to you all in 2014.  We'll see you on the road soon!

- Mat D

A big thank you to Duane Doobie and the staff of RadioInfo.com for mentioning our song "Holyoke" in this week's issue.

He writes:

"I saw lead singer Mat deRiso’s voice described as having “recently chased a Brillo pad with a double-shot of something off the bottom shelf at a rural route dive.” While that may be accurate, it’s really evidence his focus for these songs is the words and delivery – rather than his voice – in order to share with us the “beauty” that exists within the difficult days we all experience. Mat D is kind of a bad boy… but not in the popped collar, wallet chain that touches the floor, or even wearing his knickerbockers below the knee – type way. Instead, he sings about the lives of murders, thieves, and the hard living regular folks – which, according to Mat D., are not really that different. If you are looking for genericana – this is not it. Mat D and the Profane Saints tell it like it is and don’t hold anything back. If you are looking for some authenticity to add to your playlist – you should take a look at this track, this new album, or even this band generally."

Chris Plain a.k.a "The Music God" on Final Cut Radio gave Holyoke a shining review recently - here's what Mr. Plain had to say:

Every once in a while, you discover an artist so amazing, you struggle putting into words just how much their music means to you. Mat D & The Profane Saints are one such artist. I discovered them last year while searching for new music on the website, http://www.noisetrade.com Mat D had posted his music on there and I was instantly a fan upon hearing the first tune. His almost Tom Waits meets Steve Earle approach was brilliant. Since that time, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know him, as well as interviewing him for my radio show.

With the release of the new record, featuring the full band, comes another chapter in this storyteller’s career. Holyoke is finally here and I was honored to receive an early copy. The album starts with the stark sounding “Half Mile Holler“, showcasing Mat’s vocals and haunting acoustic guitar. This song is songwriting in it’s purest and most potent form. Lyrically, Tom Waits would be proud to sing a tune like this. “Tin Can Soul” is an upbeat tune with thumping bassline and cool drums.

“Gambling, Girls, and Guns” is a song that I first seen in a video from CXCW that Mat posted on his facebook a number of months back. I knew immediately then that it had HIT written all over it. I’m happy that the band hasn’t tinkered much with that arrangement, adding only a slight bassline that works perfectly. “Carry Me To Canaan” is a song that is back with a new arrangement. It works, as well. “Roadhouse Shrine” also gets the full band treatment here with an update that really shines. the band lays a sort of Bryan Setzer/Chris Isaak vibe to it that I’d describe as Voodoo Americana. “Arcadia Town” also has that ‘Voodoo’ vibe to it. It’d be a damn fine tune for someone like Steve Earle or Dave Alvin to cover. The title track has a wicked bassline that really drives the song behind Mat’s vocals/lyrics.

“Aces In A Dead Man’s Hand” has a definite Southwestern feel to it. This is one of those late night driving tunes. “Eastbound Denver Train” is another tune that I could see as a late night driving tune. The album end with the haunting tune “Dirt Road To Hell.” It’s another tune that is showcased by Mat’s amazing vocals and a slight acoustic guitar before an amazing solo by Kurt Mullins takes the tune to a new level. I had extremely high expectations for this record and the band exceeded every single one of them. New bass player Shawn Blomberg is very good and fits into the band well. the band sounds as tight as any I’ve ever heard. They play like this might be the last chance they ever get to record a song. There’s not a bad note on this album, the lyrics are breathtaking, and the production is razor sharp. It sounds absolutely huge on my surround sound speakers.

Nashville could well take a note from this band. I’d put this up against anything that the Music City is pumping out right now. This will be another jewel in my record collection and I’d highly recommend that you make it a part of yours as well. Hell, get the whole collection from the band. Cuz honestly, if you can listen to this and NOT like it, I might have to rethink out friendship.

Rating : 10+ (only because I can’t rate it higher)

Fuck Yeah Alt Country Boys was kind enough to say a few words about the new album!

An album by a guy whom I admire. He’s got an ability to craft a song and convey its message. Mat D and The Profane Saints new album “Holyoke” has been three years in the making. I’m glad it is with us and has seen the light of day finally.

I was really happy to see CXCW submission “Gambling, Girls & Guns” on this album. It has been a favorite since I saw the video last year. I feel that this song, while one of many, is a true testament to his storytelling and songwriting ability. The first song on the album, “Half Mile Holler”, is yet another example too.

"Sawmill Road" is a song that is worthy of radio play by local stations. It has the mass appeal that audiences would dig, without all the crap that seems to dominate the airwaves.

Another favorite track of mine is “Aces In A Dead Man’s Hand”. I spoken with Mat about some of his influences in the past, Tom Waits being one of them. Songs like this are tinged with that feel.

"Dirt Road To Hell" just plain and simple kicks ass. It is right up there with "Gambling, Girls and Guns" in my opinion.

The band recently added a new bass player to the mix and he sounds like he’s fitting in great.

Von over at the Americana Rock Mix was kind enough to write a RARE review, Here is what he had to say about the new album....

I’ll be honest, and I’ll keep this short and sweet. Obviously, if I find it worth my time and effort to write a review, you should be picking this up before you read any further. That being said, here’s my short review:

If you’ve been paying attention, prior to it’s release, Mat D has been sprinkling some of Holyoke‘s songs around for a little while. A couple acoustic tracks of “Roadhouse Shrine”, “Carry Me To Canaan” and the title track “Holyoke” (then titled “Hellbound In Holyoke”) can be found on Mat D’s solo EP, Broken Hymns And Ballads Of The Roadhouse Shrine, and the debut of “Gambling, Girls, & Guns” appeared at CXCW in 2013 . So, I’ve been eagerly waiting to hear the finished and refined studio versions of these songs. It’s amazing to hear a song for the first time in it’s primitive stage, and then watch it evolve into a powerful ensemble of twang and gruff. The “gruff” of course is coming from Mat D’s voice.

Admittedly, on Mat D’s solo efforts, his voice can be a little overbearing. That’s not a slight against Mat, because if you’re really listening to the songs, you can tell that it’s because of the passion that he puts into his music. Holyoke found a way to evenly mix Mat’s voice.

You still hear the passion, you still hear the gruff, except this time it’s evenly blended within the context of the music. As far as the quality of the songs, Mat D & The Profane Saints have always been top notch in their songwriting and craftsmanship of instrumental work. Kurt Mullins and Jeff Deignan (long time Profane Saints) and new bassist Shawn Blomberg know exactly how to compliment Mat’s ideas and then expound upon them. This is indeed their best effort to date. Things do improve with time and effort, and this album is a shining example of that.

Matchstick at the ready to light the fuse...

We are very pleased to announce that we have a new member in the Profane Saints. Shawn Blomberg, who has cut his chops in both the Indianapolis, Indiana and the Seattle, Washington music scenes is our new bass player. We began rehearsals tonight with the goal of returning to the stage very soon. It's a good day for the Saints!

After a year's hiatus from shows, and diligent work on our new album, we are very happy to announce that we will tryout  a new bass player in a few weeks.  Our hope is that we can make an official announcement regarding a new member of the Profane Saints by the end of August.

A few more bass guitar tracks and a few more guitar solos followed by the last vocal sessions are all that remain.  We are very optimistic we will have this released this Fall.  With the strong prospect of a new bass guitarist - we will be getting the band ready to return to the stage - and return we will!

For all of the fans, friends, bloggers, DJs and other bands we've worked with out there - we want to thank you all sincerely for your kind comments, your enthusiasm and dedication to our music.  Kurt, Jeff and Mat are all certain that once you hear the new album you will feel it has been worth the wait!

Wrapped another lead vocal session and put the finishing touches on another song.  Mat's been out sick for the past few weeks, so other than a slight illness as a bump in the road to completing all vocal tracks we're moving ahead slowly but surely.  We wrapped the bluesy acoustic track "Starlight Caravan" and began working on "Eastbound Denver Train" and "Gambling Girls and Guns"

More updates next week!  Thanks for your support!

The first song from our upcoming album Holyoke has been released! That's right - "Half Mile Holler", the opening track off the new album has been released! This raw mix debuted July 31 exclusively on bandcamp.com It is currently available for free download. More new music to come folks! Getting very close to wrapping this monster! Thanks for your support.

Wrapped three more songs last night in the studio. Roadhouse Shrine, Carry Me to Canaan and Holyoke are now complete with vocal sessions wrapped! That makes six songs out of eleven DONE! So close! We're returning to the studio next Wednesday to wrap more final vocal sessions and refine a few guitar/bass parts here and there. Glad to know this album will see the light of day very soon!

Returning to the Studio tonight - bass guitar and electric guitar tracking continues as we tackle Tin Can Soul's final solo tracks and guitar/bass work on the few songs remaining in the next few weeks. So far we have well over half of the album complete from an instrumentation standpoint!  We are looking forward to beginning final vocal tracks in the upcoming weeks of June.  Feels good to be getting this album wrapped up!  More updates coming soon!

Final sessions tonight until after Memorial Day - however Kurt has been turning out some great tracks on bass and guitar - we are happy to say that not only the Telecaster and Strat are present in the mix but the Les Paul has made an official appearance on the album and it SMOKES! Two songs complete this week with a couple more virtually complete on the horizon within the next few weeks. Mat has re-written and refined lyrics on a few key tracks with final vocal tracks coming up in early June! The sound so far is unbelievable...looking forward to everyone hearing the final results!

This week Kurt put the finishing touches on "Roadhouse Shrine" and the "sacred and the justified" - both are virtually complete - we're also wrapping electric guitar on "Eastbound Denver Train" and "Dirt Road to Hell" - also coming up this week Kurt has been working on wrapping bass guitar for "Arcadia Town" with great results so far - can't wait for you all to hear the finished product. Now that the album is nearing instrumental completion Mat is rehearsing and refining vocal parts which will wrap the recording sessions. Lots of progress!!

You may think we're crazy, but Dirt Town City Limits, Plank Road Drag and Broken Hymns & Ballads of the Roadhouse Shrine are now available on NoiseTrade.com for FREE.

Yes.  You read that right....FREE.

Why free?  Are there strings attached?  Do I have to sign my life away?

No.  Absolutely 100% free.

Bassist/Guitarist Kurt Mullins has been burning the Midnight Oil in the studio this week working up smoking guitar solos for "Dirt Road to Hell" and "Eastbound Denver Train"  - Can't wait for you all to hear this stuff...The Doctor is in!!!

Another big night in the studio! Jeff, Kurt and Mat spent the majority of the evening's session listening to re-recorded bass lines and guitar solos from the previous week as well recording the final scratch vocals for the acoustic track "The Sacred and the Justified" - Happy to say we are just a few songs away from laying down the final vocals and a few finishing touches before we begin mixing the new CD. Got to hand it to Kurt, his arrangements on bass and electric guitar are more than we had even begun to hope for. Lots of work ahead but the end result is finally in sight!

Thank you to the Double D Saloon in Brandon, South Dakota for inviting Mat to perform on May 4.  Mat's next live performance will be at the Strawbale Winery in Renner South Dakota May 23 and Old Skoolz in Sioux Falls, SD on May 24.

We are happy to announce that we will begin accepting pre-orders on our new album Holyoke beginning July 15, 2013.  Pre-orders will be accepted through a few internet platforms we are currently developing.  Those that Pre-Order the CD will also receive free, exclusive items only available to those that participate.  We are scheduled to release the album in Fall 2013.  More details coming soon.

Work continued on the album tonight with Kurt recording new bass guitar and electric guitar tracks on Carry me to Canaan and Dirt Road to Hell, as well as Mat revisiting a few acoustic tracks to round things out.  On a funny note...Kurt's cat (we will call him  Elmer) caught a baby rabbit outdoors and brought him into the house, which had us all chasing poor little Bugs around the room until he was finally released back into the great outdoors!  It's never boring folks!

This week Kurt will be once again tackling bass lines and laying down guitar work.  Really happy with what we have so far and we are gearing up for a Fall 2013 release date.  We will, as always keep you posted!

A couple fan videos from a recent house concert on 4/20. Enjoy! Thanks to Mark Gerking for the clips!

Mat D's summer gig schedule finds him performing solo and "unplugged" with the band throughout April-August 2013.  This weekend the season kicks off at Old Skoolz in Sioux Falls including stops in the Iowa Lake region, Des Moines and various parts of South Dakota all summer long.

We're hoping to stage a few Profane Saints unplugged gigs this summer featuring Jeff, Kurt and Mat in an acoustic setting at a few of our gigs...we'll make announcements as soon as everything is locked in!  Thanks again for your support and stay in touch!

Happy to announce that all acoustic guitar tracks for the entire album have wrapped!  "Roadhouse Shrine" was the final song we tackled this evening in studio and the feeling is surreal!  Now that all percussion and acoustic guitar are complete, Kurt will begin recording and arranging bass guitar tracks before completing the remaining rhythm and lead electric guitar parts.  By no means will this be an easy task but we are so thrilled with the progress we've made on the album in the last 60 days that we are ready and kicking things into high gear to get this CD released!  A great feeling to know it's FINALLY getting done...

More updates in the next few weeks - we will take it song by song until we announce the CD release date! Thanks again for your unending support and enthusiasm for the new album.  It's going to be like nothing else we've released to date!

Congrats to Kurt Mullins for ripping it up at the Chesterfield in Sioux City last Saturday night at the semi-annual  Rage Reunion!

We are back in the studio this week!  Kurt will be recording more bass guitar and electric guitar tracks with Mat wrapping up the final Acoustic tracks for the album (only 2 songs left to go and all acoustic guitar is DONE!)  As Kurt puts the finishing touches on lead guitar Mat will begin recording final vocal and background Vocal tracks...then?  IT WILL BE DONE!

Looking forward to getting you all further updates as they are available and more importantly getting this monster released!  Have a great week all!

Very, very happy to report that we have finished ALL percussion tracks for Holyoke! Hats off once again to Jeff Deignan for his tireless work and wonderful arrangements for the album! Next on the list are Kurt's bass and electric guitar tracks, many of which are already complete! Won't be long good people and you will have a new album in your hands! Stay tuned!

Work continues on our full length album (as always!)  Last night we wrapped final acoustic tracks on Carry Me to Canaan and we will be wrapping percussion and acoustic on Roadhouse Shrine this weekend - which will mean ALL BASIC TRACKS will be complete this week!  As soon as basic tracking is done Kurt Mullins will begin recording the final bass guitar, electric and lead guitar tracks.  Getting close fans!  Thanks for checking in!

Happy to announce that we wrap all percussion tracks this upcoming week - from there we refine and record fretless bass, electric guitar and final vocal tracks.  The results have been incredible to say the least and we are more excited than ever to return to the stage with a renewed vision and a new album!  More news to follow!  Thanks friends!

What a great honor it was for Mat to perform for the wonderful staff of the Hard Rock...the Iowa gambling and racing commission, those that served at the battery building and all that came out to the show to support Hard Rock Sioux City. Thanks so much for your kind words and support! Best of Luck to the Hard Rock Sioux City!!!

Mat D is confirmed as a part of the Jon Dee Graham and friends show at Vangarde Arts in downtown Sioux City on Wednesday December 12.  Jon Dee Graham is a mainstay from the Continental Club in Austin, TX and an accomplished songwriter/performer.  More details coming soon.

We're pleased to announce the upcoming release of "Broken Hymns and Ballads of the Roadhouse Shrine" an EP featuring recordings from Mat D's home studio. Stripped down to acoustic guitar and vocals, "Broken Hymns..." is a collection of six new songs in a live/unplugged setting, similar to the sound of Mat's solo performances, showcasing alternate arrangements of songs included on the Profane Saints' upcoming album "Holyoke" as well as new, unreleased solo material. "I've enjoyed the work of established artists releasing recordings with nothing but an acoustic guitar and vocals; so when I started working on home demos I had the idea of simply releasing them with minimal instrumentation for fans to check out and enjoy as a sort of live B-side/acoustic sessions to show them what we're working on and the direction the new songs are headed." The album will be available in digital format as a free download to fans. "My plan is to fully develop most or all of these songs in the future, and seeing as three of them are already slated for release with the band my thought was to just put it out there for free to anyone who wanted them." The album is scheduled to drop in a matter of days, and will be available through multiple internet platforms or via direct email from the band's official website.

Wishing all of our family, friends and fans an enjoyable Thanksgiving 2012.  We are thankful for all of you who continue to support the band, our music and all good things to come, and we are forever in your debt.  Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Next time you see us onstage...we'll be releasing our new album....STAYED TUNED!

We all love free music right?  Here's your chance to have a free download courtesy of Mat D and the Profane Saints.  Simply email us at mderiso@matdandtheprofanesaints.com and we'll mail you a new song currently in the works for our new album "Holyoke"...and there's more on the way!  No strings attached...no spam...no ploys.  FREE music.  Shoot us a line and it's yours!

In late 2011, as we came off of our first regional tour; Mat had two albums worth of material written for two distinct albums.  The first, titled “Roadhouse Shrine” was to feature the band, with the second project titled “Holyoke” to be a follow up to 2010’s “Plank Road Drag”  Ten demos were written for Holyoke with the thought that it would feature an extension of the same style of music featured on Plank Road Drag but with drums and percussion added into the mix.  As 2011 drew to a close, it became clear that during the first recording sessions that things weren’t proceeding as planned.  The music was changing.  Arrangements and songs were being tossed around  and progress came to a  screeching halt.  As our performance schedule began in the new year, it became clear that during the rehearsals the songs were taking on a life of their own, and plans for a solo album slowly but surely became plans for a Profane Saints record.  Songs were re-written, re-arranged, tossed to the side, resurrected and revamped between shows.  We had become a different band, the music had changed, the way we had played the songs had changed, unfortunately, the old recordings we’d been working on had not,  which led us to realize we needed to start from scratch.  We needed to do things better.  The music deserved it.  So after several rehearsals and a few  spirited and productive conversations it was decided that we needed to re-record everything.   Nothing we had recorded would work.  With 60-70% of the album complete we were going back to the beginning.  A hard decision, but a necessary one.  We started over.

We are happy to report that we’ve updated and rebuilt our studio from the ground up.  The sounds we have are nothing less than impeccable and it will be well worth the extra effort in getting this thing complete.  We had  hoped to have something released by now and we thank all of you for your patience and understanding.  If this process has done anything it’s made us a better band with an indefinably new sound and new vision for the future…one thing is certain: You have never heard the Profane Saints sound like this.  Our arrangements, our playing and the songs have taken on a new life and are setting the bar for everything that is yet to come.  We can’t wait to release it, and are working hard to make it ready for all of our dedicated fans, for without you we would be nothing.  Thank you for your support.  When  Mat D and the Profane Saints hit the stage again, we will have a new album for sale.

See you all soon.  We will keep you updated frequently and often.

Mat D and the Profane Saints

Mathew deRiso, Jeff Deignan, Kurt Mullins and Bob Birch

There are three new live solo recordings rolling on YouTube that feature new music to be included on the upcoming album "Holyoke"    Roadhouse Shrine, Carry Me to Canaan and Sawmill Road are songs fans will recognize from our gigs this year.  Mat recorded these at home during a taped rehearsal session.  The songs will be available for free download shortly.  These are the first of more live/solo recordings to be released very soon as the Roadhouse Shrine EP.

November 2007, in the studio...The band was at a crossroads, with the current members not really getting anywhere on the never released "Drive Thru Romance"- Mat D re-arranged the song "Dead in New Orleans" as an acoustic track on 2007's "Gasoline Rattle"....

This is the first version of what would later become "Dead in New Orleans" as we performed it from 2007-2008.  When Bob Birch was recruited and Kurt Mullins switched from bass to guitar, Kurt added some guitar tracks to this never before released song and it was shelved for the darker version that became the permanent arrangement found on "Dirt Town City Limits"- we never looked back until now!

Here you are- resurrected as March's FREE DOWNLOAD of the month...the never before released version of "Dead in New Orleans"   Click the link below to download...Enjoy!  We've come a long way in almost 4 years!

Happy New Year everyone!  Hope this update finds all of you in good health and good spirits.

2010 was a big year for the group.  We were fortunate enough to have shared the stage with David Allan Coe, John Hiatt ,Whitey Morgan and the 78's, the Giving Tree band and some very talented regional acts.  Mat's album "Plank Road Drag" out performed all of our releases to date,  it even earned a Best album of 2010 nod as well as being included on some best of 2010 lists (4 so far!)  Thanks to everyone who supported us last year.  We hope to see you very soon in 2011.

See for yourselves!  Thanks so much to Baron at Twangnation for including us in very good company!

Thanks to every single one of you who helped support the band and our music in 2010. "Dirt Town City Limits" is still generating a fair amount of buzz in national and international Americana airwaves and we couldn't be more pleased with the response we've received so far. What has been even more surprising is the response to Mat’s latest album "Plank Road Drag" which has been tremendous to say the least. It means so much to us as a songwriters and performers to hear such positive feedback. Without the support of the roots music community's writers, bloggers, radio stations and reviewers it's continued success would not be possible. We'd like to thank Jim Pipkin, Baron Lane, Bryan Childs, Brian Ross, Sam Burrish and so many of you who have lent an ear and sounded off. Good or bad, I feel I have some of the most loyal and dedicated fans a performer could have. Without you good folks spreading the word and turning new listeners on to our music we'd be another indie group lost in the crowd. I appreciate you all to no end.

With that said, many of you I'm sure have heard that our bassist Bob Birch is having some health concerns and we've had to tentatively cancel the Profane Saints entire Fall 2010 performance schedule. Bob is such an integral part of the group and we wouldn't feel right performing without him. So while he's on the mend, Kurt, Jeff and I along with help from a few friends will be performing in support of "Plank Road Drag" with a focus on my solo material from the last few years. We're in the process of assembling a performance group known billed as ‘Mat D. (original, we know!) with the core of the band being Jeff on percussion, Kurt on five stringed fretless bass and Mat on guitar and vocals. As far as additional instruments; we'd like to include harmonica, pedal steel, mandolin, fiddle and banjo- emphasizing a raw, stripped back country-flavored style. Of course, some Profane Saints material will be present and the shows will still be high energy , but with different sound and focus. We have twelve songs prepared for the next Profane Saints album "Roadside Revival" which will be waiting on the shelf for Bob's return. In addition, Mat’s working on ten more tunes he’s written in the past two months in the vein of his more recent solo material preparing for the follow up to "Plank Road Drag" We are always writing, always working, always recording it seems...and we are far from finished.

Never fear- this is NOT the end for the Profane Saints. As soon as everyone in the band is at 100% we'll continue to perform, write and record. For now, we're excited to know that many of you are enjoying what you've heard and will continue to grow with us on our journey ahead. We've got a good amount of acoustic shows coming up, hope to see you all at a gig real soon.

All the best...(can I get a hell yeah?!)

Sioux City Roots Rock band Mat d. and the Profane Saints will release a free, limited edition CD at their Sioux City March 14th performance at the Chesterfield. 100 copies of a new CD titled "B-Movie Queen" will handed out at no cost to the first 100 people at the show. Frontman Mathew deRiso says "We wanted to give something to all of the good folks that have supported us in the past few years. We decided that pressing a limited quantity of discs to hand out at the show would be a cool, sort of collectible idea that would feature some brand new music from a couple of new CDs we're working on right now. It's the best 'thank you' to our fans we could think of." Mat d. and band have been busy recording two CDs slated for release 2009. The first album being a Profane Saints venture titled "Dirt Town City Limits" is nearly complete and will be released in Spring . "It's the best thing we've done so far" Mat says "The songs range from an early punk sound to straight forward rock n' roll all presented in our Americana/Roots style; We're really looking forward to it's release." As for the other CD, Mat will also release his third solo album "Plank Road Drag" in the Fall. "Plank Road Drag will expand on the sound of my last two solo discs with a much more upbeat, fuller acoustic sound featuring mandolin, banjo and slide guitar verses the stripped down voice and guitar approach. The idea is to release a few CDs that will target both of our audiences. One for fans of our amped up, electric sound and the other for acoustic/roots enthusiaists." We're proud to announce that Mat d. was awarded Folk Rising's Album of the Year 2008 for his solo CD "Merciful 66" Mat was fortunate enough to have earned this award in 2007 for the album "Gasoline Rattle" Two years in a row ain't bad! Much appreciation to Gary at Folk Rising for his enthusiasm and support of Americana and Folk music. THANK YOU FOLK RISING! Here's what they had to say - Folk Rising™ Music Productions, LLC (Folk Rising)'s 2008 Folk Album of the year is awarded to Mat D for his Merciful 66 album. Gary Kappenman, A&R for Folk Rising, stated "as I sit here listening to Mat’s Merciful 66 album for about the 20th time, I’m considering that reviewers of Mat’s first solo album, Gasoline Rattle, reminded them of a young Steve Earle. While I enjoy listening to Steve Earle’s work, I believe Mat’s new album goes significantly beyond Steve Earle’s work in both the striking imagery of his lyrics and the heartfelt soulfulness he brings to his vocals. If you like Steve Earle’s work, you’ll love Mat’s new Merciful 66 album!”

The Saints wish to thank Chris Radloff and his lovely wife for doing such a great job on the new promo photos. Chris runs Hippie Boy Design - a booming web design and photography company here in Sioux City. Not only did he break us into a truck yard on a Sunday afternoon in the rain for some shots with a classic white freightliner, he also captured what we feel are some damn cool photos of three guys with faces for radio and made us look as good as humanly possible- with the help of photo-shop of course. (The fourth and only exception was Jeff, who looked quite dapper in his clothes-pin tie and vest. Why the hell didn't we put him out in front???) And, even though he couldn't seem to get a smile out of Mat (who swears he was smiling the whole time) We'd like to direct you to his site in case anyone of our readers needs a professional or personal website and/or professional photography (and kick ass senior pics from what we're told) to give this long haired friend of ours a call. Visit Chris at www.HippieBoyDesign.com You'll be glad you did.

'Drive Thru Romance' the long awaited follow up tp the 2006 LP "Small Town Burning..." will not see the light of day and has been scrapped. After rehearsing new, stronger material with the line-up featuring Kurt Mullins on guitar and newest member Bob Birch on Bass, the band has found it's stride and will soon begin work on a full length CD with the working title "Dirt Town City Limits" While some of the music intended for release on 'DTR' will be present on the new CD- all of the tracks from the ground up will be re-recorded and rearranged to reflect the band's evolving and grittier new Americana sound. It's more country, with punk, jazz and blues influences that we look forward to showcasing at the Chesterfield in Sioux City on October 25th. We've also updated the tracks in the music section. A few live tracks have been added (and removed!) largely in part and thanks to our new friend Lee who was kind enough to send us a bootleg recording of our August 1 performance at the 29th Annual Sioux River Folk Fest. My Dad and I would fish at Wollaston Lake, Sask. from time to time. These trips were the few weeks we spent together after I had graduated from college. One day, on the boat in 2001, Dad told me he would like his ashes to be scattered in Wollaston Lake when he died. I thought I'd be a much older man when that time came. My Father passed away Feb 8th in Denver Colorado - and it's a bright sadness to fulfill that promise I made to Dad seven years ago. This song is written for you Dad. May the cold water carry you to heaven's gates. Wollaston (in memory of Neil deRiso) I will stare at my reflection in the water searching for the piece of you that's left in me If I close my eyes and chase after your memory will your silhouette be all that I can see? Not so long ago you'd carry me the distance now I hold your unchained spirit in my hands I'll commit your body to that holy water may it carry you up to the promised land your restless heart will find redemption in love's river your weary soul will shine like diamonds in the sun one day I'll meet you on the shores of the eternal today I'll say goodbye to you at Wollaston. your restless heart will find redemption in that river your weary soul will shine like diamonds in the sun one day I'll meet you on the shores of the eternal today I'll say goodbye to you at Wollaston today I'll say goodbye to you at Wollaston words and music by Mathew R. deRiso copyright 2008 Mary Moe Music
from www.folkrising.com: Folk Rising â„¢ Music Productions, LLC (Folk Rising)'s 2007 Folk Album of the year goes to Gasoline Rattle by Mat d., singer / songwriter from Sioux City, IA. Gary Kappenman, A&R for Folk Rising, suggested that this new solo album from Mat d. "combines the best of old acoustic roots / folk / country blues music with leading edge Americana blues and a hard driving gospel flavor to produce Folk Rising's pick for this year's top folk album. Our favorite lyric from the album is ' Baby, this train is still bound for glory, despite all of our rambling ways' from the Bound for Glory track offering hope of redemption in the depths of despair ". Thanks and much appreciation go out to Gary Kappenman for this great honor. Read more at www.FolkRising.com
Resurrection Boulevard is the latest song to be featured on the Americana Roots Review No. 59 You can download the podcast at iTunes or at www.AmericanaRoots.com Big thanks to Ray and everyone else at AmericanaRoots.com for their support!
The kind editors at BluesBunny.com, a site devoted to independent music reviews and based in Glasgow, UK have just published a review of Mat d's solo release. Here's what they had to say. Mat d. Gasoline Rattle Mary Moe Records/Music Works The troubadour. The singer of the songs. The storyteller. Stories of the grit and grime of life glamorised in the way that only poets manage. Poetry set to music as epitomised by Lee Hazelwood, Kris Kristofferson or John Prine. Songs that mean something to you and not just after that fifth beer. This album from Mat D (aka Mathew DeRiso, front man from Bluesbunny favourites Mat D and the Profane Saints) provides some fine additions to the canon of country - and indeed popular - songs. There are songs that we have heard before, of course, like "Bound for Glory" but they manage to survive on their own without the support of a band. Mat D's voice shows that flawed but real quality that is associated with proper country singers and he sings his own songs well. Redemption is a common theme in proper country music and "Damnation Line" hits the mark evoking images of the emptiness of the highway at night and, by inference, the emptiness of life when you have lost something - "…a wandering soul never cries". There is a theme that runs through these songs in that Mat D paints pictures of people's sense of dissatisfaction with life. Not dissatisfaction with what they have got but perhaps dissatisfaction with what they have gotten out of life. Let's not forget that he also does a nice line in hope as well and "Midway Babylon" illustrates that. He is a dramatic if dark songwriter, however, and we've said it before but no one puts a soap opera to song better than Mat D. That said, we did miss a band sometimes, especially on the songs that we have grown to love like "Bikini Bull Riding". There are songs on this album that will (or at least should if there is any justice in this world) become standards. Writing songs that can touch people's souls is no easy task and it is certainly no guarantee of commercial success but we raise our glass to Mat D as we think of our "Sweet Louise". (Rated 4 out of 5 stars) For more reviews of great independent music be sure to visit www.BluesBunny.com
'Resurrection Boulevard' and 'Roadside Revival' are on display in the MUSIC section in all of their raw, fresh from the studio glitz. Enjoy! More to come soon!

Mat d. was recently featured in Folk Alley's Alley chat, a monthly newsletter for Folk Alley's listeners. Here's what the fine souls at the alley had to say: "Mat d. is a singer/songwriter from Sioux City, Iowa who may be best known as lead singer for the band Mat d. and the Profane Saints. The songs he posted in Open Mic are more acoustic, with strong storytelling and a powerful point of view. Our friend Jim Pipkin says about Mat d., "Do yourself a big favor, trundle over to matdandtheprofanesaints.com and meet this strange dude for yourself. Give his tunes a listen. Buy some stuff. And if you are ever trapped in Iowa, near a honky-tonk called Sweet Fanny's, roll on in and shake his hand for me between sets. But under no circumstances should you introduce him to your sister."
From www.FolkAlley.com The Alleycast for December features Folk Alley's exclusive concert recording with Arlo Guthrie, plus our in-studio session recording with The Polyjesters. Artists Mat D. and Fallen Ivory are featured on this episode, along with a special montage of Holiday favorites. We'll also feature the work and story of the mysterious Jandek, a musician who has released 51 records with virtually no information known about him. Download The Alleycast today." Mat d. and the Profane Saints will return to the Chesterfield on Saturday March 29th. Popular Americana - Roots Rockers Snakebeard Jackson will be opening the show.
In Fall of 2007, Mat d. and bandmate / producer Kurt Mullins set out to record an acoustic demo for promotional purposes. Instrumentation was kept to the bare minimum using only guitar, fretless bass and mandolin. After completing the sessions they felt the music was strong enough as a full blown acoustic release. The album "Gasoline Rattle" has been released as a precursor to "Drive Thru Romance" and will be available to the public on December 14th. Jim Pipkin, an accomplished performing musician and songwriter from Arizona, a highly respected member of the Americana community, esteemed member of the Americana Music Association and contributor to HickoryWind.org has awarded "Gasoline Rattle" as the one his 4 top releases of 2007 at HickoryWind.org.! Here's what Jim had to say: Mat d. - Gasoline Rattle - Released in a bar called Sweet Fanny's, a Sioux City hangout whose crowd would eat most of the Americana posers out there today alive. Mat's songs are funny, crusty, dirty glimpses into an America out beyond the strip malls. All writers hate to be categorized or compared, but in some ways Mat reminds me of a young Steve Earle, with a more powerful set of pipes. The subjects of his songs flash by like memories of a road trip, with recurring themes of faith, cynicism, and finding what love the world throws at us. One lyric describing a lover hit me, from the tune Midway Babylon: "The years they had not been too kind, but a ramblin' boy like me don't mind." Don't take my word for it, go and hear this guy! Thanks, Jim. We're very honored you chose our little "demo" to be at the top of your list! To hear Jim's Music and learn more about Sour Mash for the Soul visit http://www.myspace.com/jimpipkin
Mat d. has been announced as the featured artist in Folk Alley's Open Mic spotlight. Folk Alley offers independents, unsigned artists and unknown songwriters a shot to get their music heard from their home base at Kent State in Ohio, focusing on everything from Old Time, Blues, New Folk and Americana. Thanks to Folk Alley for the feature!

Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com "Gasoline Rattle" is the new solo album from Mat d. and producer/bandmate Kurt Mullins. A forerunner to the Profane Saints anticipated release "Drive Thru Roamnce", The album is now complete and should be released in December 2007. The 9 song acoustic LP features original material inspired by love, faith and sin down the backroads of pastoral America. From the greasy truck stop on I-29 past the damned and forgotten down the diesel kissed highways rattling towards the an old marquee on the Vegas strip . Gasoline Rattle is set to inspire the dark and romantic with it's glimmer of hope lyricism and grassroots acoustic arrangements. Look for it in the next few months on I-tunes, Rhapsody and CDBaby.com
Hand it to Jim Pipkin to deliver an honest slice of criticism all the way from Mesa, Arizona! His review of Brand New Faith was posted to HickoryWind.org today. Read on at www.HickoryWind.org or find the review in the Review/press section of this website. Thanks Jim! As they say in Mesa - 'Okay Then.'

Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com Can you say STANDING ROOM ONLY? Did you happen to see the drunk, the wild and the Deified DANCING ON THE TABLES? We can, and we loved it! The Chesterfield was turned into the devil's congregation for an evening of song, sin and salvation. Thanks to everyone who made it out to the show (you know who you are! ) with the fabulously hip Quaker City Night Hawks a success! Special thanks to our new friends from upstate New York who happened to hear we were playing and were kind enough to join in on our little Roadside Revival on their way through the Midwest. What a great night! Looking forward to the next time around. Until then-AMEN!
We'll be removing and revising some dead links in the LINK section of Mat d and the Profane Saints.com in the next few days. If your link disappears, it should re-appear shortly once we've cleaned a little house, or the webmaster will fix the link so that it matches with the appropriate site.
Mat finished up the initial vocal and guitar tracks a week ago, and wrapped up the last song with Kurt at the Production helm this evening. Can't wait to hear the end result!-should be cool. As soon as the bass guitar and sparse instrumentation are complete, we'll update the site with new clips and perhaps a free download or two. The songs completed for the solo CD titled "Gasoline Rattle" are: 1.Heart of Diesel 2.Midway Babylon 3.Damnation Line 4.Guilty Man's Gun 5.Bikini Bull Riding 6.Sweet Louise 7.Dead in New Orleans 8.Bound for Glory (remixed from 'Brand New Faith') 9.American Eulogy The album features a sparse acoustic guitar tracks with lead vocals and minimal harmonies. Most of what's left is some bass guitar that Kurt will be laying down to round out the sound. So far, even the raw tracks sound very cool...similar to recent releases by Kris Kristofferson and the American Recordings series by Johnny Cash in attitude and feel-all thrown together in a loose comfortable way that emulates a live performance with the benefits of the studio. All of the songs are originals, mostly new material. "Bikini..." and "Sweet Louise" are new recordings of material released on the out of print LP "Small Town Burning.." and "Dead in New Orleans" will appear on the upcoming LP from the Saints titled "Drive Thru Romance" in full on electrical form. We'll continue to keep you updated as things progress.
You may notice that the guestbook disappeared a few days ago. A couple of folks on the mailing list have dropped our webmaster emails about it's abscence. Fear not, the Guestbook will be back up and running soon. Also, more rough mixes from the studio are on their way and will be posted in the next few weeks.

Had lunch with a friend who saw the show and was informed of something quite surprising. He said "Did you know 10 people walked out on your show and have labeled you a Christian Rock Band?" "NO!" I replied, "Where did they get that idea?" Well, through thinking about it-I was addressing the 'congregation' as I called it (aka the BAR) with phrases like "Can I get an AMEN?" and "Hallelujah, what's it to ya?"however I'd like to make something quite clear here: Mat d. and the Profane Saints is in no way shape or form a 'Christian' band. We are not evangelists. If your soul needs saving and you're coming to us for salvation or the path there of, you're headed straight to hell. Mat d. and the Profane Saints perform 'Hell Raising Gospel' or in other words: Gospel music the devil could listen to. It's a gimmick. When you hear us say "Can I get an Amen" it means "Did you dig that song? Here's another" When you hear us say "Halleljujah, what's it to ya" it's our way of saying "How the fuck are you anyway?" For your dose of religion and spirituality, feel free to visit the house of worship, church, temple etc. of your choice. If you're an athiest, sleep in on Sunday. My music is not in anyway evangelical or Christian so to speak. It's about age old themes. God, the devil, Sin, Salvation, Hard Luck Losers, Freaks, Junkies, Ramblers and the like. It's just a theme. Much of the earliest american music reflects these topics. Be you believer, skeptic or ye of no faith, we just want you to enjoy the music. That's all. We won't be performing at any churches anytime soon, not that we have a problem with any of them, it's just not us. If your interested in hearing God Rock, visit your local Christian bookstore. If you're looking for some original roots rock and americana Profane and Saintly-then you've come to the right address. My music is all about the duality of man. The good and the bad, The sinful and the holy, The saved and the damned. That's it. No altar call here. Just rock n' roll ( and a lil' bit o' country too!)

The album, once completed will be available at all of our live shows, solo and with the band, as well as distribution through Itunes and a slew of other digital companies in the following months upon it's release (the digital set-up and marketing takes a few months...but never fear, it'll be incredible!) Can't say enough about the good folks at Sweet Fanny's Pub in Sioux City. Great food and good times. I've been playing there since 2003 and what can I say, it's my home away from home. Played an energetic set for a small but enthusiastic audience...a perfect way to close out a Saturday night. Special thanks to Garie Lewis, Kitty and Miki and all of the great staff and regulars I've been seeing monthly at the solo gigs. Everyone that lends their support helps me to continue to write and perform. Thank You. (photo by Kitty)
Mat d. and the Profane Saints are Pleased to announce that they will be a part of this summer's Downtown concert course Friday Nights on the Promenade. The Saints will perform from 6pm-8pm on Friday August 31st. Thanks to Brent and Co. for making this possible!

Mat d. and the Profane Saints were scheduled to perform, but due to illness and circumstances beyond our control, the band is unable to perform Friday night. Mat d. will be performing solo at 9pm in support of SCARLET RUNNER, the Friday night headliner. Please keep our beloved guitarist Kelli Johnson in your thoughts and prayers for himself and his family.
Had a great time doing the solo thing at The Chesterfield Thursday night...Thank you to Rick and Co. for treating me so wonderfully as always...thanks to everyone who stuck around for the solo set. Great to meet Emily from Stealing Mercury, the strange Bongo playing boy and the couple that danced so soulfully to my acoustic bluesy rants...I love last minute gigs!
We all had great fun playing Sweet Fanny's on Saturday...THE HOUSE WAS PACKED!!! Tons of people, lots of good music and great times...sold a ton of merch (thank you! Hope to see you wearing the brand around town!) and had quite a few regular fans show their faces once again. We were overwhelmed with the positive vibe and the support of new and tried and true fans alike. We would have loved to play a second encore, but were thwarted by a man swing dancing with a barstool and the presence of a few of Sioux City's finest officers of the peace. None the less...THANK YOU to Kerry, Kathy and Co. for being such wonderful hosts as always, and to everyone who blessed us with an appearance. Hope to see you all at venue near you.
The finished version of Shine on Me is up and running in the music section...Kelli Johnson has out done himself on this one folks! Check it out!

A little bird told us that there is a very good chance we'll be playing a certain famous bike rally in a little town called Sturgis somewhere in South Dakota...but it's just a rumor so far...we'll keep you updated as more information is available. So far it looks like 4 shows during the rally at a few venues and or campgrounds. We will keep you aware of all goings on as they come to fruition.
Just got word from the promoter and our friends in 66 Crush that Midwest Mayhem will now be held on June 2nd instead of June 30th. Music ranging from Metal, Jazz, Rock and whatever else will be on hand for this all day local music fest. Stay tuned for more details.
We've got a few songs for the new album complete. "Lye Soap Cigarettes and Gasoline" is done as well as "Bound for Glory" and both are available in streaming audio on the website 24/7. We started production on "This Truck makes more $$$ After Midnight" and so far so good-this one has some serious stank to it as Jeff puts it, so be on the look out for a raw preview soon! We've also begun recording new tracks on "Rambling Mary Jane Walker" and "Sideshow" for Small Town Burning Revisited. We're very pleased with the sound so far and Kelli's doing a great job on lead. We'll be starting on a few new songs including some of Kelli's work in the next few weeks including "Sanctified" , "Austin Texas Roadshow Queen" and "Resurrection Blvd" Look for the new album to be released in mid May or early June if all goes well. Stay tuned for more previews and more updates on the progress from the studio.
MyIMGHost - Free Image Hosting We had a blast up in Sioux Falls this last weekend. It was not only great fun playing the fabulous Lava Lounge, but what an honor to open for the Bottle Rockets, who put on a great rockin' show. Good times were on hand, we hope to visit Sioux Falls again soon! We played a strong set, and the crowd was very, very supportive. Thanks to all of our Sioux Falls friends and family who came out and supported the Profane Saints.
Small Town Burning...Revisted In the recent months since becoming a full time band, Mat d. and crew have decided that the orignal album "Small Town Burning" will no longer be available. Only a handful of copies remain, so if you'd like a copy BUY ONE NOW...after they're gone they will not be available for purchase by ANYONE. The remaining copies are in very short supply (less than 20 remain) and once they have sold, they will NEVER be pressed again. HOWEVER... MyIMGHost - Free Image Hosting The Profane Saints are pleased to announce that production has begun on "Small Town Burning...Revisited" featuring the new permanant line-up! We've been hard at work re-recording and re-working 6 of the old tunes for release in spring 2007 to coincide with our new CD "drive thru romance" Songs included on this new release include new versions of 1.Rambling Mary Jane Walker 2.Swivel Town 3.Carolina Home Wrecker's Blues 4. Bikini Bull Riding 5. Drinking Gin and Sipping Tea 6.Sideshow. These are brand new takes on what we've heard are our crowd favorites. This release will be sold for $10 and will be made available on a permanant basis. We hope you'll enjoy revisiting these songs as much as we enjoy making them better in every way.
MyIMGHost - Free Image Hosting Highways. Blue Plate Specials. Quickies in the Backseat of a rusty old car...lost love, and Gasoline. I never meant to write a concept album of any sort, but it seems that lately, after reading over the lyrics for the new album that I may have indeed done just that. The title "Drive Thru Romance" is taken from the opening line of the first song "Lye Soap,Cigarettes and Gasoline", and I wanted to use it because I thought it sounded ruggedly authentic in what I was going for as far as a dark, moody theme, but again, after going over the lyrics and listening to what we've been working on together as of late, it seems perfectly suited for a dark ride down America's back roads of old time religion, superstition, redemption and personal revival. The album finds the band refining it's roots rock/Americana style all the while drawing from Insurgent Country, Folk and Blues influences to make some of the best music we've collectively worked on. What I've compiled here is are the stories behind the 12 songs to be included on the album to give those interested an idea of what we're accomplishing. 1.Lye Soap, Cigarettes and Gasoline... The record opens with a jolt of rockabilly fueled roots rock in the backseat of a highway serial killer's car...the song speaks from the killer's point of view "Her luck ran out in Omaha, I left her at a rundown dive motel" The character in the song keeps picking up freakish and easy women along the road, praying to his bobble head Jesus doll and concealing the evidence when he's had his fun. "I put Jesus on the dashboard, said me a prayer then I hooked up with another broad" The character has broken down to the three essentials of his existence...The lye soap to wash away the women, the cigarettes to calm his nerves, and the Gasoline that not only fuels the engine, but helps burn away the bodies. "Lye Soap Cigarettes and Gasoline, good Lord I've broken down to three...so give the devil he's due pretty mamma, then come on home and you can give the rest to me." 2.Shine On Me... A long bluesy rant from the trailer parks, truck stops, and bedrooms of white trash America. From the "Doomsday preachers at Topless double features" to the "Trannies at the truck stops putting on their make-up"...This song not only celebrates the fringe of this great land of ours, but also steals a line from a familiar Sunday School hymn, supplying a redemptive silver lining in the dark, out of view and fringe elements from the saved and the lost of 21st century America. Whether it's the devil dying his hair blonde, or Judas heading to Vegas to find a little soul...salvation is found when we all let our lights shine. AMEN. 3.This Truck Makes more $$$ After Midnight... While on a road trip up to visit my parents in Minnesota, I was traveling behind a Semi Truck with the message stuck to the back of his trailer reading "ATTENTION: This Truck Makes More $$$ After Midnight"...I was inspired to write a song about a trucker driving somewhere between Heaven and Hell, crossing the yellow line between damnation and paradise..."If the Good Lord makes me holy, he's going to wash away my sin...I'm going back into Hell until I don't feel well and then I'm flying up to Heaven again"...only later did I discover that the phrase holds multiple meanings in the trucking business, from bootlegging, hauling illegal drugs, prostitution and riding on the back roads and rural highways to avoid the Department of Trucking...I think I got the point...this has quickly become a band favorite. 4.Bound for Glory... In the summer of 2006, Jeff, Kurt and I were sitting on the back porch and recalling our old part time jobs from highschool and younger, more innocent times. Jeff told me about a motel that doubled as the greyhound bus stop in Sioux City called the "Bus Stop Motel" If memory serves. He got a job cleaning up and helping out when he was needed...He said "...the place smelled like stale piss and broken dreams.." That's what inspired me to write this one. It's about being at your lowest point, but realizing that someday, beyond hope and circumstance, you'll find peace and redemption. "Follow me to the old railroad station, lay me down at the end of my days...baby this train is still bound for glory, despite all of our rambling ways..." I was heavily inspired by Woody Guthrie on this one...I wanted to convey my faith and belief in the fact that indeed, despite struggle and hard times...we're all "Bound for Glory". Thanks Mr. Guthrie. 5.Resurrection Boulevard...Let's face it, what kind of album could you have without a kick ass dirty Gospel song...? "Resurrection Boulevard" combines gospel sentiments, with cold hard insurgent country rock n' rhythm...think of it as a scene form a mythological Armageddon...when the saints and sinners rise from the grave to reclaim the boulevard from the living...Unread Gospel? WHY THE HELL NOT!? "I've got a hussie with a halo she's been treating me fine, we're gonna ride that Mother F**her to the end of the line...they say that train , train, train is glory bound..." Irreverent and yet uplifting...this song not only speaks of resurrection, forbidden love, lust and faith, but manages to tear the roof off of your inhibitions. Hallelujah...pass the bottle. 6 Austin Texas Roadshow Queen... "I'm going down to Austin Texas, gonna find myself a Roadshow Queen" A fantasy trip down south to find an exotic woman while rambling with the devil, in the midst of finding that old time religion to "cure what's ailing me" I've always enjoyed the music from Mississippi Hill Country... Artists like R.L. Burnside, Watermelon Slim and Jimbo Mathus have inspired me in recent years, as well as acoustic blues master Guy Davis...this is my song celebrating tattooed women, sin and salvation on the road down south. As blue as the state allows.... 7.Betty Got Saved.. My song to the eternal spirit of the pin-up doll Betty Page. After posing for controversial S&M pictorials and gracing the covers of the undergorund and leading men's magazines...Betty Page found Jesus, and turned traded her fishnets, rubber balls and feathers for a life of Bible tracts and modesty. "Now that Betty's gone to Jesus that poor devil's gonna break down and Cry..." The dark side lost a fallen angel...heaven welcomed a prodigal daughter back...and the world will never be the same. Betty Page will always remain an icon of sexuality, scandal and freedom from the stiff necked, straight laced and conservative times that led to the sexual revolution...here's hoping I've done her justice with this number. 8. Roadside Revival... "they've got a Neon Cross flaking on the highway..." States the opening line of the irreverent "Roadside Revival"...a shout to the big tent religious revivals of the early 20th century with a pagan and sinful slant...from the "waitress in the pink dress swinging with a vengeance" to the "newborn devil dancing in the fire" this rocking' blues offering features not only a classic feel and sound reminiscent of Howlin' Wolf and Willie Dixon with lyrical inspiration from Dylan and Lou Reed...but conveys a message of salvation through sin...A lover becomes redemption in the backseat on the side of the road...heaven is attained on earth...revival is found at the roadside with passion's release "before I die...I'm gonna find survival...our Roadside Revival" Instead of a big tent and lusty preachers, it's a congregation of two in a big black chevy...like "straight six miracle sent to us from heaven above". Salvation never felt so good. 9. American Eulogy... "All night travel plazas shine their spirit lights...to the unread soul crusaders passing by...they're calling them to join that sinner's rendevous, while America the beautiful lays down to die..." A moody, dark and dreary song about the state of the Union, beyond political and social parties and sentiments combined with a personal editorial of sorts. This country will die in some way form or fashion...let's face it...countries change...so do circumstances. We either roll with the punches or meet our destruction. This song represents a mythical eulogy of sorts for the end. Referring to America the beautiful as a weathered and wounded lover, crawling "across the blood stained, cracked linoleum towards the glory of it all" Religious imagery held together by death and despair.. Delusional visions of greatness from a dive bar..."Until the day we find America the beautiful outside the gates of hell". I'm looking forward to collaborating with Damien from Mt.Suzuki on this one...should end up sounding unlike anything you've heard from us. 10.North Star... I wrote this one for my wife. In 2003, reflecting on the death of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan was quoted a s saying "John was the North Star, you could guide your ship by him"...that's how I feel about Molly Marie - my Irish fireball, my lover, my friend and confidant in good times and bad. Molly and I met each other at the perfect time, each of us with our tarnished halos and unique heartaches. It's amazing what love, understanding and friendship can do for the soul. I've written and re-written this song 3 or 4 times to try to convey my feelings for this remarkable woman that I share my life with, it's certainly proven one of the most difficult and time consuming songs I've ever had the privilege of writing...hopefully, I'll be able to show the world what I feel for the love of my life. I love you Molly...you will always be my "North Star".. 11.Sanctified...When the Profane Saints reformed as a full time band, we were lucky enough to find the perfect guitarist to round out our new line-up. Kelli Johnson wrote this blistering blues rock monster and sings it with enough conviction and raw power to raise the dead. This song got it's beginning in Kelli's band the Rhythm Jacks, and we're proud to carry the torch and keep the fire burning...this one is bound to be one of the best cuts off of the album...Hell, it's the best song I never wrote...I'm certainly glad Kelli did! 12.City By the Sea The band needed a grassroots, raw and punk driven folk anthem...and this is it. City by the Sea closes the album with a classic folk ditty about Mermaids that run off with the devil, angels that lose their wings and that lost paradise for a wandering soul known simply as "The City By the Sea"...this one has quickly become a crowd favorite at live shows and displays a light, worry free side of the new line-up. We had fun on this one and it's not hard to hear! Equal parts Guthrie and the Replacements or The Drop Kick Murphys and Pete Seeger rolling down the dusty streets towards pay dirt...it's our offering to the cannons of American folk music. AMEN. So there you have it...Drive Thru Romance, We can't wait to take you for a ride! We'll post new mixes and recordings ASAP...stay tuned and check in on us at www.matdandtheprofanesaints.com Now go rest your eyes.

We've got another raw mix from the studio posted on the website, "City By the Sea" features not only a drunk chorus, (courtesy of the Full Gospel Motel Singers) but some of the best drumming I've heard out of Deignan yet... ALSO... got a contact today for STURGIS...might turn out to be pretty cool (Thanks Dave and Erica!) we'll keep you posted.

Mat d. and the Profane Saints received a very positive write up at www.ninebullets.net Nine Bullets is a popular music blog that has run the gammet from Metal, Alt. Country, Roots Rock and even some Old Timey...other bands recently featured on the site are Nashville Pussy, Slayer, Old Crow Medicine Show, and the Drive By Truckers...I've been enjoying the hell out of this site for weeks now...check it out! You can link directly to Nine Bullets on this site through our Links page.
An alternate mix of the ballad "Bound For Glory" has been made permanantly available at www.matdandtheprofanesaints.com. Simply visit our music section and download to your hearts content. Hope you enjoy.

The website has a new 'darker' look...we like it and we hope you do too, it's all tied into the the theme of the next album, which so far is sounding far superior to the first. More focus and more energy. 3 songs are pretty much complete for the new album 'drive thru romance'...we're thinking there will be 12 songs on this one...(for samples of what we've completed so far, visit the music section!) The songs have more of a definitve sound to them and we've been very happy with the result so far. Jeff and Kurt are laying down some seriously infectious grooves, and Kelli is adding a new found focus and rougher edge in the guitar department, as well as supplying some great songwriting skills-with stellar vocals to boot. We should have a couple more ready this month and we're looking forward to giving you all a preview. Until then...take care and stay well.
I've been writing a ton over the last few weeks and it's feeling great. I'll be posting some new demos soon (when I have the time...) Got a ballad called "Betty Got Saved" based on the Notorious Betty Page, "Roadside Revival"..along bluesy rant that will soon feature Kelli Johnson on lead vocals- "Bankrupt Soul" which ties in with some Sioux City landmarks from the past and present and few of Kelli's songs that he's given me some freedom with. All in all, February has been very rewarding and I'm very thankful to everyone who have supported our shows, collective and solo in the last few months. Among these are the Tera, Bob, Chuck, Kaitlyn, Brooke, Benny, Dead Man's Hand, 66 Crush, Mt. Suzuki, the Kelly Quinn Band, and too many others to mention. We greatly appreciate your support.
A big thank you and a hearty "HELL YEAH!" to Dead Man's Hand (who are louder than hell! Great energy!) and 66 Crush (Loved the Zeppelin Intro! Good Stuff!)...and a very special thank you to everyone who came out to see us all at Pete's 20th in Sioux City. We had an ear splitting great time! We'll be making our next appearance in Sioux Falls at the Lava Lounge in support of the Bottle Rockets, and we'll return to Sioux City for an evening at the fabulous Pub known as Sweet Fanny's on March 24. Hope to see you all there!
We didn't impress any cowboys, but word has it we rocked the house last night at Rhonda's Speakeasy (Special Thanks to the Kelly Quinn Band for hosting us, and to Rhonda for being so gracious...) We saw some famialiar faces in the crowd and had a great time...we hope to do it again soon! Hell, from what we heard, adudeeven rode a horse through the bar. (GOSPEL TRUTH.) Only in Iowa....
More shows have been added in the live section of the website...the Profane Saints will open for the Bottle Rockets on March 10th in Sioux Falls at the Lava Lounge. Also, guitarist Kelli Johnson will perform solo at Sweet Fanny's in Sioux City on Feb 17th from 10pm-Midnight...count on us to make the whole month profane and rockin'!
The latest and greatest new song is on display in the music section. "Shine on Me" is a very raw cut from the new album coming soon in 2007. Kelli has yet to add his touch to wrap this this one up...but we wanted you to hear it...hope you enjoy!

Here's what songsillinoismp3 had to say about the new CD - " Mat d. & the Profane Saints hail from Sioux City and their new record came out Oct. 28. It's peopled with sideshow freaks, hard luck losers, prostitutes and drag queens. Musically it's got a bad case of hardcore-rockabilly-infused rock `n roll." visit this music/blog site for hip commentary and some nice write-ups on up and coming releases http://songsillinoismp3.blogspot.com/
