I met punked out cocktail waitress on restless Wednesday night
at the Waxtown City Diner looking halfway out of sight
small town living left her road hard damned near put away wet...not yet.

Well, we stole on down the road inside a junkyard auction ford
making love at every Motel that a poor boy could afford
until we burned through all our money bout the time the engine froze...who knows?

I need to get caught up but she can't sit still
a little baby in the oven and a gas tank left to fill
they say you never pay for happiness with hundred dollar bills...Oh, no.
I'll trade a fan belt and a hub cap for a suit coat and a tie
she'll use her panties as a veil and wrap an oil rag 'round her thigh
make a bouquet out of tumbleweeds and hold on til we die...my, my.

we had ourselves a cool Ford Marriage til the spring of 83'
turns out a house of love don't run on truck stop grease and gasoline
I hear she settled down in Lincoln and our baby's twenty five...just drive.

sometimes I'll take that road to Waxtown just to have a look around
and haul what's left of this old shit box to the rambling side of town
where an old man still remembers how a run a good time down...so down.

but I never got caught up I guess she couldn't stay here
and I've been running down this road from job to job from year to year
and every one night piece of action don't look good without a beer...or ten.
Yeah, I still got that dirty suit coat and that Sally-Ann boe tie
and the memory of her naked with that oil rag round her thigh
and everytime I see a tumbleweed I shake my head and sigh...my, my.

I met the only girl I've loved on restless Wednesday night
at the Waxtown City Diner looking halfway out of sight
yeah small town living left her road hard damned near put away wet...not yet....not yet...
