come and run a greasy hand through spinning Jenny's hair
she'll wind her way to some damn town that's half way here from there
when big iron wheels begin turn in show rings painted gold
on ancient roller coaster tracks that shoulder half the load
the yard-dogs dream in courderoy and hum a union rag
while showgirls judge the tractor pull beside the plank road drag
the straw bale queen's a skinny thing her vestments paper thin
she shouts a high and lonesome call to draw the ramblers in
as dreadlocked mammas donned their clogs and danced with Old Joe Clark
til Black Eyed Suzie lost her top and everything went dark
the fairground's new evangelist pulls serpents from his bag
where Moses took another wife out on the Plank Road Drag
a crucifix of wire n' sticks'll guard the wheelhouse door
where ag machines and muscle cars stand dying on the floor
the big iron wheels that never turn the show rings in decline
all scattered cross an ancient track corroded and divine
the dead elite with calloused feet remember what they had
they dance the devil's graveyard blues beyond the plank road drag
someday I'll join that promenade beyond plank road drag
